Law firm appointed in Brazil

Giles Brake - 27 June 2008
Campos Mello Vinci Schiller Advogados joins international law firm association MSI Global Alliance

Reflecting the growing importance of Latin America as a whole, international law firm association MSI Global Alliance is taking steps to reorganise its law firm presence in the region, starting with the appointment on 1 July 2008 of Campos Mello Pontes Vinci Schiller Advogados in Brazil.

The fast-growing Rio de Janeiro headquartered firm is relatively new, having been established in 2007, but was formed from several well-established practices, and includes a number of tax lawyers that split away from one of Brazil's leading national firms. The firm has already grown to 80 lawyers.

James Mendelssohn, MSI’s Chief Executive, says: “MSI plans to grow aggressively in Latin America within the next two years, and it is crucial that MSI has in place strong independent law firms in all the main commercial centres that can handle the increasing range and volume of transactions our members in Europe, Asia and the Americas regions are involved in. Campos Mello Pontes Vinci Schiller Advogados fits this profile perfectly, and their appointment is a pivotal stage in our development in the region.”

The firm serves a large number of private companies, but also a number of public companies, and half of the firm's clients are foreign companies, with many from Europe, particularly Italy and Spain. The ability to better serve its local client base outside of Brazil is the key driver in the firm's decision to seek membership of an international law firm association, along with the aim of maximising opportunities for building a strong international practice serving the clients of MSI member firms investing in Brazil.

The full service firm provides legal services focused on: tax, corporate and securities, litigation, real estate, public law, environmental law, administrative law, anti-trust, project financing, contract law, mining, and oil and gas. The firm's main specialty is commercial real estate, with Brazil experiencing a boom in this sector.

In addition to the Rio office, the firm has an office in Sao Paulo that is currently staffed by 2 partners and a total of around 5 lawyers, and has plans to increase its presence in the city in the near future. The firm also has a network of correspondent firms throughout Brazil.
