Arkansas Lawyers Conclude Historic Desegregation Case

Sati Foakes - 03 March 2010
Jack Nelson Jones Jiles & Gregory defending North Little Rock School District

On February 17, 2010, Jack Nelson Jones Jiles and Gregory, P.A. concluded a four week long trial in the historic case regarding the desegregation of the North Little Rock School District.  Attorney Stephen W. Jones is a founder of the firm and has represented the District in this case since 1984; attorneys Debby Linton and Mika Tucker assisted Jones in the trial. In closing argument, Jones argued that North Little Rock School District leaders not only met but far exceeded the requirements of their desegregation plan: “I think the overwhelming testimony of the district’s witnesses has shown this court just how deeply they care about the plan and the education of African-American children in particular.”

U.S. District Judge Brian S. Miller has not yet issued a decision on whether the 9,660-student district is unitary and therefore released from any further federal court supervision of its desegregation efforts.  If the North Little Rock district is declared unitary, it would no longer be subject to court monitoring in the areas of staffing, special education services, extracurricular activities, compensatory education programs, gifted education, the condition of school facilities, student discipline procedures and internal desegregation monitoring.
