Paul Hughes, former Head of Commercial Services at Eversheds' East of England office, has joined MSI Global Alliance's East Anglia law firm member Birketts.
The appointment strengthens Birketts' commercial team, and brings into the alliance an expert in advising U.S. companies on all aspects of European Union competition law, including merger control, collaborative and cooperative joint ventures, agency distribution and licensing, with a particular focus on publishing and technology.
Paul Hughes has advised and provided training to a number of high profile clients including Astron (document-management and print and billing specialist), Archant (the UK's largest independently-owned regional media business) AGFA (acting in relation to its total prepress solutions business distribution and commercial agreements), Arjowiggins (advising on European distribution strategy) and T&S Stores (newspaper distribution). He is currently advising ARM Holdings Plc in the US and Europe on EU competition law compliance.
Paul also recently acted for Bertrams Books, a major UK book wholesaler in relation to a complaint made to the Office of Fair Trading regarding anti-competitive practices by publishers in library and independent book retail distribution.
Paul has also been involved in:
- Advising Weetabix and Hazlewood Foods on their distribution arrangements
- Advising on the cancellation of BOCM Paul's national exclusive distribution agreements on competition law grounds
- Acting for Jardine Motor Group and Acushnet/Titleist on their selective distribution arrangements.
- Advising on a number of EU merger filings (most recently General Dynamics/Alvis and Bae/Alvis)
- Advising on recent UK merger control issues in the e-commerce and software sectors
- Acting for G’s Fresh Beetroot, obtaining a clearance from the Office of Fair Trading for their merger with Olversons.
