SMEs must recognise ability of the mid tier, MSI's CEO tells The International Accountant

Giles Brake - 01 February 2008
James Mendelssohn explains the need to change perceptions in the accounting sector

In an interview with The International Accountant regarding auditor choice, James Mendelssohn comments: "There are a limited number of clients that need a truly multi-national service and the Big Four are entirely appropriate for such clients. Whether four such firms offer sufficient choice is debatable, because in reality there is seldom a choice of four by the time potential conflicts
have been identified!

"If you take this one stage further, the really worrying scenario is when a large, multi-national business fails to find an auditor, either because of conflicts of interest or because, for example, the risk analysis is such that none of the Big Four wish to take that business on as a client."

"Mid-sized organisations are never going to compete with the Big Four or the Magic Circle firms on truly global, multi-national assignments. It would be inappropriate and quite wrong. However, the mid-sized organisations are well equipped to handle bi-lateral assignments and in that respect, they do offer a wider choice than is currently recognised by many SMEs and their
advisers."
