Doug, who has himself been an accredited member of The Law Society’s Planning Law scheme since 1997, was recently re-accredited for a further five years. He is MSI’s only accredited planning member in the UK. In order to become accredited under a Law Society scheme, lawyers have to demonstrate that they have spent at least 300 hours working exclusively in their specialist field for each of the three previous years. To support his accreditation application, Doug highlighted his success on cases such as the Berrier Hill Wind Farm, the Haverigg footpath inquiry in November 2011 and the rejection of a proposed wind farm at Cumwhinton.
Doug said, “When I look back over the last three years, I have been involved in some of the county’s biggest planning stories so it was not too difficult to find examples to demonstrate my experience. The Lake District National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the outstanding beauty of Cumbria are some of the factors which make planning particularly tricky in our region, but I think that forthcoming changes to planning law and better organised objectors mean that, in the future, any development of any size is going to face problems at the planning stage.”
Doug completed his solicitor training at Carlisle City Council before joining Burnetts in 1974. He has been a partner at the firm since 1979.

The Plenary Session of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE)approved without restrictions the association between Petrobras, Copersucar, Raízen, Camargo Correa, Odebrecht and Uniduto for the development, construction and operation of a pipeline and intermodal terminals and a port system for the transport and flow of fuel, especially ethanol. The company that will operate the Integrated Logistic System is called Logum. During its analysis, CADE recognized the importance of an efficient and integrated system for solving the logistical bottleneck in the country. Although some competitive concerns have been raised during the transaction analysis regarding risk of collusion between the shareholders and even discriminatory treatment by raising rivals' costs in relation to third parties, CADE dismissed any concerns that might exist in this regard, because of Logum's governance structure as well as strong regulation which ensures open access to pipelines and is under the monitoring of the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).The association between Petrobras, Copersucar, Raízen, Camargo Correa, Odebrecht and Uniduto to enable the construction of the Integrated Logistic System, due to its green field characteristics, was considered innovative, efficient and competitive by CADE, which unanimously recommended approval of the transaction without restrictions.

The 14-strong team of corporate legal specialists at Harrison Clark, which has offices in Worcester, Cheltenham, Ross and Hereford, has completed 46 transactions – worth more than £70million – in the period from December 2011 to the end of March 2012.
This shows a significant increase on last year’s, still healthy, figures of 25 transactions worth a total of almost £65 million – another record result compared with the same period in 2009/2010.
The 2012 results show yet again the breadth of Harrison Clark’s size and expertise within its business services department. Transactions have included the acquisition of a large hotel in Bath and a management buyout of Ross-based NAM Engineering Ltd and its subsidiary, ABT Products Ltd. The firm also acted on behalf of a client in a £5m refinancing deal, as well as acting for the vendor on the disposal of an oil and gas down hole survey provider for $100m.
Harrison Clark completed numerous additional acquisitions, disposals and refinancing deals including a multi-jurisdictional transaction involving the UK, Dubai, the USA and Australia. Rod Thomas, Harrison Clark’s managing partner and head of business services comments: “Once again the results speak for themselves. We are continually expanding the services offered by our corporate legal team in response to the demands of our clients, meaning businesses of all types and sizes can rely on our legal advice. In order to ensure that all angles of corporate transactions are covered, we are also supported by the full service expertise of the firm’s other business and private legal departments. Philip Sergeant said "the challenge was in the documentation of all the terms and correlating the numerous parts of the deal including the international aspects to an exact timetable so that 80 odd documents were signed and exchanged simultaneously on closure. Due to the popularity of these sessions, the Carlisle firm has announced their online events programme for the year ahead.
Webinars are online seminars or ‘web-seminars’ hosted and delivered live and direct to your computer desktop. Attendees can view the contents of the presentation on their screens and listen to the audio on their computer speakers, or using their telephone handset. The webinar format allows attendees to ask questions and give feedback through interactive live polls.
The next session of 2012 will be held on Tuesday 24 April. This free session, hosted by expert solicitors at Burnetts, aims to help businesses avoid being the subject of an inspection, as well as examining what you should be doing if an inspection looms and how to minimise the time and stress such inspections consume.
In particular the event will cover:
• Inspection powers• Powers to service notices/ fees for intervention• Enforcement powers• Restrictive covenants
Each webinar lasts around 1 hour and is specifically scheduled over the lunch hour to fit into the working day of busy professionals. Presenting online means factors such as travel time and cost for attendees are eliminated and although the webinars are held as live events, each session is recorded so anyone who isn’t available during the event can review it at a later time on our website.’

International contact partner and tax lawyer Emiel Reijerse comments: "Only Hong Kong beats the Netherlands in the rankings. The Netherlands mainly scores well in terms of the cost of transporting goods, because of its ports and airports and its good access to the European hinterland.
"And with regards to the ease of starting a business, the Netherlands is streets ahead of every other country."
The results were confirmed by a major European study conducted by an accounting firm (March 2012). The Netherlands is shown to be one of the most attractive countries for foreign companies seeking to establish themselves in Europe.
In terms of operating costs, the Netherlands is the cheapest country after the UK and the best country in the eurozone. The study measured the most important cost items such as wage costs, set-up costs, transport costs, telecommunications, energy and taxes. The Netherlands scores highly in the areas of telecommunications, research and development (R&D), production processes and wage costs.

Accounting Today serves as the premier news vehicle for the tax and accounting community in the US and its prestigious annual lists rank the top firms both nationwide and in specific regions of the country.
ALL was also recently ranked #21 by the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) in their 2012 annual survey of the area’s largest accounting firms, placing them in the top tier of Boston’s 50 largest CPA firms. The BBJ compiles this information annually for distribution to their readership and their Book of Lists publication, which ranks the topmost in Boston business by industry. Accounting firms are ranked by the number of CPAs in MA.
Both achievements are a result of ALL’s strong commitment to growth and creating opportunity for the firm and its clients. In early December 2011, ALL announced a merger with local Framingham, MA based CPA firm, Langbort & Buettner, preceded by a merger with Newton, MA based CPA firm, Gold & Goldberg, in November 2010. The firm additionally acquired a small CPA practice in the summer of 2010.
Principal, Ron Loberfeld, CPA, ALL’s managing partner, ascribes the firm’s success and increased stature to hard work, strategic planning, consistent teamwork and principals’ dedication to building the practice. Being positioned as a regional industry leader and placing in Boston’s ‘top 25’ is a significant benchmark for the firm, fueling recognition within Boston’s business community and in New England.

The tier 1 ranking in foreign trade positions the medium sized firm alongside international mega firm Baker & McKenzie, thereby offering companies a real alternative to such large international firms.
Chambers & Partners is the most consulted directory of legal firms around the world. For more than 20 years, this publication has identified the most prestigious law firms in each region. Law firms are designated by means of an independent and objective investigation, and selected through a system of interviews with clients and other local and foreign attorneys.
‘We are delighted to share this success. Being considered by Chambers & Partners as one of the best legal firms in Mexico makes us more committed to improve the quality of our services and the level of satisfaction of our clients,’ says Marcela Trujillo Zepeda, managing partner at the firm. With MSI's expansion to Argentina, Colombia and Brazil in the last few years, this news about MSI's Mexico law member confirms the quality of the representation MSI is able to offer businesses operating across the Latin American region.
