Brexit and British Citizens in Norway

The UK has left the EU and the agreed transition period expires 31 December 2020. Ensure you have official proof of residency when travelling to Norway from 1 January 2021. MSI's Norwegian law member Magnus Legal explains more.

The time is running out and you need to act now! You should:
  • Register as a resident in Norway now
  • Be prepared to apply for the new residence permit when it’s introduced by UDI
  • Check your passport. You may need to renew your British passport. Passport

Until 31 December 2020, there is a transition period and the regulations for British citizens that visit, live and work in Norway are the same as prior to Brexit. UDI is developing a new type of residency permit for British citizens that register in Norway prior to 31 December 2020. When the application form for that is ready, you must apply and meet with the police upon filing the application. This new residency permit is scheduled to be introduced in January 2021. All UK national’s resident in Norway by 31 December 2020, including those who have previously registered, will need to get a new residency card. This will happen after 31 December 2020 If you move to Norway after 31 December 2020, new immigration rules will apply. You must apply for residency permit as citizens of countries outside the EEA/EU. You can no longer use the special application procedure and type of residence permit as those who registered before 31 December 2020. You can visit Norway for 90 days without a visa or residency permit, but you are not allowed to work without applying for a residency permit. The 90 days is during a 180-day period.
