India: Key highlights of the 2021 Union Budget

This report by MSI’s Indian accounting member Chokshi Group provides a summary of the key highlights of the 2021 Union Budget which was presented by the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman on 1 February 2021.

Reiterating the pledge given to the people of India, to give this nation an honest, clean and transparent Government and to build a strong, confident New India, Honorable, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, our Finance Minister, provided the Budget today. Laying a vision for AatmaNirbhar Bharat, the Finance Minister said this is an expression of 130 crore Indians who have full confidence in their capabilities and skills. She said that Budget proposals will further strengthen the Sankalp of Nation First, Doubling Farmer’s Income, Strong Infrastructure, Healthy India, Good Governance, Opportunities for youth, Education for All, Women Empowerment, and Inclusive Development among others. The Budget proposals for 2021-22 rest on 6 pillars:
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Physical & Financial Capital, and Infrastructure
  • Inclusive Development for Aspirational India
  • Reinvigorating Human Capital
  • Innovation and Research & Development
  • Minimum Government and Maximum Governance
