Senior appointment for Thorntons’ Inverness operation
Private Client Partner, Magnus Mackay, joins Thorntons following its recent recruitment of 10 new Inverness team members from Wright, Johnston and Mackenzie (WJM).
Also formerly of WJM where he was a Partner, Magnus brings 16 years of experience to the role and is a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). His areas of expertise include the preparation of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, inheritance tax mitigation and succession planning for business owners.
Magnus is a native of the Black Isle and a graduate of the University of Aberdeen. He said: “I’m delighted to join Thorntons’ new Inverness operation. As a legal firm that is committed to the success of the communities it works in, Thorntons brings something new, fresh and dynamic to the city.

Thorntons, which already acts for clients in the north, including University of Highlands and Islands and Cabot Highlands, launched its first permanent Inverness-based operation in November 2023.
The Inverness practice will operate a full-service model offering a range of legal services, from private client work including wills, trusts and tax planning, to residential property and specialist commercial advice to business clients operating in the city’s most prominent sectors. These sectors include commercial real estate, agriculture, life sciences, energy and renewables, and hospitality.
The team is currently based in serviced office space as work is undertaken to fit out new modern premises within Beechwood Business Park with anticipated completion of Spring 2024.
